How a sleep mask can improve your sleep

It's getting late. I'm lying in bed, my mobile phone has finally fallen out of my hand, my thoughts are still spinning. A little longer. And then, silence. Darkness. Or rather, a darkness that envelops me like a soft blanket. Since I've been wearing my sleep mask, the moment I fall asleep feels different.

More conscious. Safer. Calmer.

What seems so small and inconspicuous has a big impact for many: the sleep mask. A piece of fabric that helps us to sleep better and perhaps even to feel more at peace with ourselves.

How light disrupts our sleep and how sleep masks can help

Sleep problems can be frustrating. And they are common. It's often small disruptive factors that affect our sleep, but one of the biggest is light.

Our bodies are amazingly sensitive when it comes to brightness. As soon as light reaches our eyes, especially the blue light from smartphones or street lamps, the production of melatonin is inhibited. This hormone is responsible for making us tired. If it is blocked, sleep stays away.

This is where the sleep mask comes into play. It works in a very simple but effective way: It blocks light. Full stop. It supports the natural release of melatonin and that means: falling asleep better, sleeping through the night better, waking up more refreshed.

Travelling companion, everyday aid, sleep ritual

A sleep mask is worth its weight in gold, especially when travelling, on a plane or in hotels with light-coloured curtains. It creates a small, constant darkness regardless of the location. But it is also a valuable aid at home, especially in urban areas with light pollution or for people working shifts.

For me, it is more than just practical. It is a signal: now it's time to rest. Like a little sleep ritual that helps me to switch off better. I often put the mask on my eyes and feel the day slipping away from me.

Your sleeping conditions: More than just darkness

Your sleeping conditions play a key role in restful sleep: the temperature (not above 18 degrees!), fresh air, quiet and, crucially, darkness. Each of these factors helps your body to relax and switch to sleep mode. The sleep mask takes care of the darkness - leave the rest to the optimal design of your bedroom.

Establishing a sleep routine - why rituals are important

A fixed sleep routine is just as important as the external conditions. If you go to bed at the same time every night, you are signalling to your body that it's time for bed. Rituals such as reading a book, drinking a calming tea or even putting on your sleep mask can help you to calm down inside. A consistent evening routine supports your natural sleep-wake rhythm and is part of any evening routine for a good night's sleep.

Care that pays off

As with everything that comes into contact with our skin, hygiene is also important when it comes to sleep masks. Regular cleaning, preferably by hand with mild soapy water, helps to prevent skin irritation and prolongs the life of the mask. Particularly gentle materials such as silk sometimes require special care, so it is worth taking a look at the manufacturer's instructions.

Better sleep starts with mindfulness

At avonté, we believe that good sleep doesn't start with technology or pills, but with mindful evening rituals and natural sleep aids.

Our sleep masks are plastic-free, made from natural materials and designed with care: soft, breathable, fair.

Because in the end, a good night's sleep is not just about rest.
It is also an act of self-care and begins with mindful sleep hygiene, natural sleep aids and conscious evening routines. And sometimes it starts with a piece of fabric that helps us close our eyes and let go of the day.

À vontade - make yourself feel at home!
