Pyjamas and 'Schlafanzug' - what's the difference?
What is the difference between a 'Schlafanzug' and a pyjama?
Hello dear avonté community!
We have noticed that there is often confusion when it comes to the german term “Schlafanzug” and the term “pyjamas”. That's why we'd like to shed some light on the matter today and explain the difference between these two terms.
Pyjamas or Schlafanzug- what's the difference?
To be honest, for many people there is no difference between these two terms. Both terms are often used interchangeably and basically mean the same thing: Clothes you wear to sleep in. But if we take a closer look, there are a few subtle differences.
The german 'Schlafanzug'
Traditionally, 'Schlafanzüge' are a two-piece set consisting of long trousers and a long-sleeved top. They tend to be simple and functional and are made from single jersey knit or interlock. The focus here is on comfort and warmth. In addition, pyjamas often have cuffs on the sleeves and trouser legs, which ensure that nothing slips, even if you move around a lot in your sleep.
Pyjamas
Pyjamas are basically also a two-piece set, but can have many more variations. They can be short-sleeved, long-sleeved, with shorts or long pants and made of different materials - from cotton to silk and linen. Pyjamas are often more stylish and have a classic look. A characteristic feature of pyjamas is the full-length button placket on the top, as we know it from a shirt. If the top has to be pulled over the head, they are more like 'Schlafanzug'. Pyjamas are usually made from woven fabrics that are durable and keep their shape. However, they are also available in stretchy jersey fabrics that offer plenty of freedom of movement and are particularly soft.
Why do we use both terms on our german website?
At avonté, we focus on transparency and authenticity. We make high-quality pyjamas and loungewear from leftover fabrics from the fashion industry - sustainably and stylishly. You will therefore mainly find the term “pyjamas” on our website. But sometimes you'll also stumble across the word “Schlafanzug” on the german side. Why? It's important to us that we don't exclude anyone and reach out to everyone looking for sleep, no matter what term they are familiar with.
